★★★★★ — Oh, a new favorite!
“And in case you’re still wondering, that bird made it through the storm too. He’s still out there, pecking at the window and shrieking at me from the other side of the glass. Daniel has decided to name him Bartholomew.- I fucking hate Bartholomew!"
If you find yourself driving down a winding mountain road near an endless stretch of pines, try tuning in to 104.6 FM: the radio station that shouldn't exist.
The village of Pinehaven has a secret of monstrous proportions. Evelyn McKinnon, a radio host falling on hard times, finds herself utterly unprepared when she learns that the radio station isn't just for entertainment. It's a watchtower.
She's stalked by a bird with human eyes. Her new co-host won't stop singing show tunes. And when the fog rolls in, the beasts of Pinehaven Forest begin their brutal hunt. Evelyn and her friends are suddenly face-to-face with something much scarier than ravenous flesh-giants and vengeful spirits: responsibility.
“A Lonely Broadcast' is a darkly comedic tale that mixes elements of cosmic horror, gruesome gore, and a touching story about friendship, grief, and finding hope when all seems lost. It's also the story of an unhinged woman's personal war with a goddamn bird.”
This book is probably one of my favorite read of the end of 2024. it’s gruesome, gore, full of wit and the main character is so unhinge but easy to root for that I was hooked from the very first few sentences. The friendship between the two main characters is excellent. I mean, hell literally get loose on them from day one and they still ask for it. No way they leave the other one behind and try to understand what’s happening. The atmosphere is pretty good. I’d say, It’s scary but not that scary technically. But definitely gore. It’s just the way Kel wrote it and the way the thick atmosphere and horror parts blend perfectly with the character development. This book, for me, was like looking a 80’s horror movie when you don’t know if you want to laugh or be scared and you ended in a weird state in between, during the whole movie. That’s how I like horror, and that’s how I binged read this book in one go, in a few hours.
